Three months of focused preparation is enough to make a meaningful difference on your SAT score. The key is structure, consistency, and smart practice. Here's a week-by-week framework that our test prep coaches use with students.
Month 1: Diagnose and Build Foundations
Start with a full-length, timed practice test under real conditions. Don't study beforehand — you want an honest baseline. Review every wrong answer carefully, categorizing your mistakes: Was it a content gap? A careless error? A time management issue?
Spend the first month addressing your biggest content weaknesses. If algebra is your weak spot, drill it daily. If reading comprehension is the issue, practice active reading strategies with challenging texts. Use official College Board materials whenever possible.
Month 2: Strategy and Timed Practice
Once you've addressed foundational gaps, shift focus to test-taking strategy. Learn the structure of each section deeply — know how questions are ordered, what common traps look like, and how to use process of elimination effectively.
Take one full practice test per week under timed conditions. After each test, spend at least as much time reviewing it as you spent taking it. Understand not just what you got wrong, but why, and what the correct reasoning process should have been.
Month 3: Refinement and Simulation
The final month is about consistency and confidence. Continue weekly practice tests. Focus on your remaining weak areas while maintaining your strengths. Simulate test-day conditions as closely as possible — same time of day, same environment, no phone.
In the final two weeks, avoid introducing new material. Focus on reviewing your most common error types and reinforcing your strongest strategies.
Key Principles
Quality over quantity matters enormously in SAT prep. Two hours of focused, analytical practice beats six hours of passive re-reading every time. Keep an error log, track your progress, and celebrate improvements — even small ones.
